CompanyNational Geographic is a TV channel dedicated to exploring the planet, protecting wildlife & habitats. On Sunday 9th July 2017, National Geographic shot Earth Live, a live two-hour broadcast allowing audiences to watch for the first time live wildlife lit only by the moon, in full colour, from key locations across six continents from South America to Asia & everywhere in between.
Business needNational Geographic looked for a media services partner to deliver the two hour broadcast of Earth Live, showcasing the planet’s most amazing wildlife shots by some of the greatest cinematographers. With broadcasts from key locations across six continents — from South America to Asia & everywhere in between, the media services partner needed to have the ability to handle the complexity of a live global broadcast shot from multiple locations worldwide.
MX1 was selected to support the production of National Geographic's landmark programme Earth Live. Services include:
- Aggregating & processing live feeds from a number of wildlife locations around the globe, including Fiji, Cairns & Darwin in Australia, Ethiopia, Alaska, the tropical wetlands of Pantanal in Brazil, Finland’s Kantiovaara, Koran Island in Thailand, & Jodhur, India
- Delivering 10 hours of tests & live feeds over the course of two days, culminating in the two-hour long live broadcast
- Three feeds distributed directly on SES 4 from Africa & Europe, with a further three feeds incoming from North America via SES satellites
- Handling complex operation, notably in Fiji, where divers followed a school of Bull Sharks in real time (receiving the feed on a boat & transmitting it back to the studio via microwave, satellite & fibre)
MX1 provided a one-stop-shop media services & dedicated transmission for an extremely complex live broadcast. With multiple live feeds from multiple locations, this enabled viewers to be transported to different areas of the world, giving them unique insights into animal species living on this planet.
